NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer
Cyberattacks keep growing in number, and organizations need a planned, documented way to manage the risk. Many build that program on NIST guidance.
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publishes free cybersecurity guidance that government agencies and companies of every size use. Its Cybersecurity Framework sorts cybersecurity work into six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover. Other NIST publications add detail, such as a catalog of security and privacy controls (NIST SP 800-53) and the requirements for protecting certain sensitive U.S. government information (NIST SP 800-171). An implementer is the person who turns this guidance into a working cybersecurity program.
The PECB NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer training course enables you to implement a cybersecurity program based on NIST publications, including the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST SP 800-53 and NIST SP 800-171. You build the skills to manage cybersecurity risk and strengthen an organization's security, as a program lead or an advisor.

Passing the exam lets you apply for a PECB NIST Cybersecurity Implementer credential. PECB awards the level that matches your experience, starting at Provisional NIST Cybersecurity Implementer for people new to the field. Certification Requirements, farther down this page, lists every level
Why Should You Attend?
Organizations that follow NIST guidance need people who can lead the work of building and running a cybersecurity program. This course covers NIST SP 800-12, NIST SP 800-53, the NIST Risk Management Framework, NIST SP 800-171 and the core functions of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
You practice building a cybersecurity program aligned with business goals, documenting requirements in a System Security Plan, and preventing, detecting and responding to threats. After the course, you can sit the exam and apply for the PECB Certified NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer credential, or the level that matches your experience.
Who Should Attend?
- Executives and directors who oversee cybersecurity initiatives
- System administrators and network engineers who want a deeper knowledge of security controls and risk processes under NIST standards
- Professionals who develop and implement cybersecurity programs
- Advisors who provide cybersecurity or compliance services
- Digital forensics and cybercrime investigators who need the technical and regulatory context of NIST frameworks
- Cybersecurity and information security professionals who want to strengthen their NIST knowledge and risk management skills
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain core cybersecurity principles and concepts
- Support compliance with NIST SP 800-12, NIST SP 800-53, the NIST Risk Management Framework, NIST SP 800-171 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework

- Creating a System Security Plan to document cybersecurity requirements
- Using the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to build and maintain a cybersecurity program
- Quizzes structured like the certification exam
Prerequisites
A fundamental knowledge of cybersecurity principles and frameworks. The NIST Cybersecurity Foundation course is a good way to build it.
Course Agenda
The topics follow PECB's five-day plan for this course. At your own pace, you work through them in this order.
- Day 1: Introduction to NIST cybersecurity standards and principles
- Day 2: Risk management strategy and supply chain risk management
- Day 3: Selecting security controls, awareness and training, and continuous monitoring
- Day 4: Cybersecurity incident management
- Day 5: Certification exam
Examination
The PECB NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer exam covers five competency domains:
- Domain 1: Fundamental principles and concepts of cybersecurity
- Domain 2: Planning an organizational cybersecurity strategy
- Domain 3: Assessing and advising on cybersecurity programs and security controls
- Domain 4: Cybersecurity incident management
- Domain 5: Cybersecurity incident response
PECB's list of exams gives the exam type, duration and available languages.
Certification Requirements
After you pass the exam, you apply for the credential that matches your experience. Every level requires a pass on the PECB NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer exam and a signed PECB Code of Ethics.
| Credential | Professional experience | Cybersecurity program experience |
|---|---|---|
| PECB Certified Provisional NIST Cybersecurity Implementer | None | None |
| PECB Certified NIST Cybersecurity Implementer | 2 years, including 1 year in cybersecurity | 200 hours |
| PECB Certified NIST Cybersecurity Lead Implementer | 5 years, including 2 years in cybersecurity | 300 hours |
| PECB Certified NIST Cybersecurity Senior Lead Implementer | 10 years, including 7 years in cybersecurity | 1,000 hours |
Program experience can include applying NIST guidelines and controls, advising on incident response and crisis management, designing awareness and training programs, setting up the monitoring of controls and processes, and running risk assessments with the NIST Risk Management Framework.
Questions About Enrolling
Does passing the exam make me certified?
Passing the exam lets you apply for a PECB credential, and PECB reviews your application. Foundation credentials are open to everyone who passes the exam and signs the PECB Code of Ethics. For Lead Implementer, Lead Auditor and Lead Manager courses, PECB awards the level that matches your experience. If you are new to the field, you start at the Provisional level and can apply to upgrade as you gain experience. Each course page lists the requirements for every level.
Can I add a portfolio program?
Yes, with ISO/IEC 27001 Foundation, ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer and ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer. Each portfolio program is a separate Tech Academy program with its own price and enrollment.
Explore the portfolio programs and find the one for your courseDo I need a portfolio program to get exam support?
Exam support, including office hours every two weeks for 90 days from enrollment, comes with the ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 42001 courses themselves. Portfolio programs are an optional extra, sold separately.
Can I join a portfolio program if I trained with another provider?
Yes. Each portfolio program is sold on its own, for anyone who is taking or has completed the matching training.
